Non-Spoiler Book Summary
“Daughter of the Siren Queen” is the second and final installment of the Daughter of the Pirate King series. I originally came across this series due to one of my favorite things ever: Owlcrate! I look forward to my Owlcrate every month, a big thank you to all Owlcrate staff for always choosing great novels!!! So I got “Daughter of the Pirate King” through Owlcrate in February 2017 and “Daughter of the Siren Queen” came out this February.
“Daughter of the Siren Queen” continues the story of Alosa, Daughter of the Pirate King and Siren Queen. The story takes place 2 months after the events of “Daughter of the Pirate King.” Alosa finally has acquired every piece of the map needed to find Isla de Canta, the island where the sirens keep their treasure. About to disembark on a treasure quest of a lifetime, Alosa learns of a terrible secret her father, the Pirate King, has been keeping from her. Now at odds with her father, Alosa and her crew are literally sailing for their lives trying to out run the Pirate King’s whole fleet and make it to Isla de Canta first.
Being half human and half siren, Alosa is hoping to use her powers to help all those she loves but is unable to control the monster within herself until Riden. Riden simply says Alosa’s name and she is instantly brought back to herself and is not just the mindless pleasure-seeking creature that the siren is. But with Riden and his brother being Alosa’s prisoners, can Alosa every trust him? Will he help save them all or betray and doom them so he can be free?

I rated “Daughter of the Siren Queen” by Tricia Levenseller at 4 out of 5 Stars. Overall I enjoyed the story, it was a quick and pleasant read. The plot is easy to follow, main characters are mostly likeable, and there is a great balance of action. Levenseller excels at keeping things interesting and I was in a constant state of anticipation, wanting to know what would happen next!
Alosa is a fun, assertive, kick-ass pirate captain with powers of a siren and bright red hair (my favorite)! I love her no BS attitude and her never-ending strength to save those she loves and cares for. However, she can be a stubborn ass especially when it comes to Riden! Really appreciated the love story between Alosa and Riden but I found Alosa’s reluctance to not face her feelings to be a bit overkill. I understood it at first, especially since Riden was a prisoner and she couldn’t entirely trust his motives, but once he was a willingly contributing crew member she was just being obtuse! I’m glad that they ended up together in the end but they sure wasted a lot of time.
Something that Levenseller did very well was Alosa’s feeling towards her father. Regardless of the abuse and lies, he told her, Alosa still couldn’t come to purely hate her father. As in real life, children who are abused by their parents struggle with their feelings towards their parents. On one end, their parents are their abusers, their enemy, their villain, their monster. But they are still their parent, the child is at the mercy of the parent for clothing, food, shelter, and the overwhelming need to feel loved. It is natural and very common for people to both hate and love their abusers, especially when it is a parental figure.
What I would have liked to see more of in this series is more background on the world, especially the sirens. I was a bit confused on why Alosa turned into more of a mindless monster when she changed into her siren form but the full sirens had no problem not attacking those they knew not to and obviously had loving relationships. None of them were mindless monsters so why was Alosa, simply because she was half? It just didn’t add up for me in that regard.
All in all, fun story with adventure and romance, loved the siren and pirate theme. I will be keeping my eye on Tricia Levenseller and look forward to seeing more from her.
