9 Magical Things about Sarah J. Maas’s “A Court of Mist and Fury“
(MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)
1. Hades and Persephone retelling
Maas does it again! While Book 1: “A Court of Thorns and Roses” is loosely based on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast, “A Court of Mist and Fury” pulls features from the Hades and Persephone myth. Fairytale retellings are wonderful! The myths and fairy tales provide nostalgia, comfort in its familiarity, and their lessons/moral of the story are timeless. While the retelling allows creativity, originality, and spins to make the classic story exciting again for the audience.
2. The Court of Dreams
Rhysand’s pack of “monsters” are absolutely delightful! The dynamics among his friends, their bickering and banter with each other are so realistic, lighthearted, and absurdly funny. A reader cannot help to be attached to each and every character in the Court of Dreams, Rhysand’s intimate family, and friends. More details about favorite characters coming up!
3. World-Building
As an author, Maas really has mastered the art of world-making and describing that world to her audience in a way that is both descriptive and concise. Maas reveals enough of the world for readers to not be confused and yet not be bombarded with details that don’t matter. She gives a great balance of information to whet the curiosity of the reader while maintaining the present story. Sarah J. Maas is a truly gifted storyteller!
4. Faeries
Fantasy has been my favorite genre since I was a child! I spent many days pretending to be a fairy, elf, elven, fae, princess, mermaid, Sailor Moon… oh the list goes on and on! And well, I’m an adult now and I still want to be these beautiful, magical creatures so I live vicariously through books. Apparently, this is more acceptable than running around in public wearing wings, a tiara, and tossing glitter everywhere.
5. Lore
While this is only the 2nd book in the Court of Thorns and Roses series and therefore there is still plenty for Maas to reveal of the World, what she has revealed thus far is enticing. There are multiple faerie courts, some based on seasons, unique types of faeries, terrifying creatures and monsters of unknown origins, such as the Weaver and Bone Carver, and magic that is as unique as each character that wields it! I can’t wait to find out more.
6. Rhysand
Rhysand is epically awesome. And not just because he is the strongest High Lord ever, although that is awesome! No Rhysand is epic because he loves so selflessly. He understands that Feyre is her own person, with her own thoughts, feelings, and needs. When he knows they are Mates, he respects these truths! He allows Feyre to make her own decisions, mistakes, and sacrifices. Those are her choices, he will honor them, and not cage her in any way. Rhys is a territorial alpha male but has healthy boundaries. Yay Rhys!
7. Feyre
Gotta love on Feyre Cursebreaker. Human turned High Fae. Powers from each High Lord. Sexy, sassy, sweet, and strong. But Feyre also makes mistakes. She loathes herself at times. There are parts of herself that she is not proud of. There are things that she had done that she believes to be unforgivable. And yet, she comes to understand that she is not her mistakes. Feyre comes to realize that she is lovable; not being perfect doesn’t mean she isn’t worthy. Beautiful transition for Feyre in this book!
8. Maas’s Writing
I’m pretty sure I comment about Maas’s writing in each review I have done of her books and the reason is because she is a wonderful writer! Maas is fantastic at description, really painting a picture of how the character is feeling, allowing the reader to identify and empathize with that feeling.
9. Amren
Upon first coming across Amren, I was unsure about her; I was cautious about her loyalty especially since Azriel questioned her motives as well. Regardless, Amren charmed her way into my heart! Not only is she super powerful, she is Rhys’ 2nd. Thank you Rhys for being quite the feminist! And how can I not love a creature who covets and hordes shiny, sparkly, glittery, pretty things like a fire-drake?!
