Nikki’s Rating: 7 out of 10
Summary: Mare and the Scarlet Guard are desperately fighting for the freedom of Reds in Norta. Backed by the “free” democratic Montfort, they may have a chance against Maven if they ally with Cal and his powerful Silvers, but Cal wants the crown. Will Mare be able to sway Cal into doing what is right or does she have to kill both brothers in order to be free?
7 Wondrous Things about WAR STORM by Victoria Aveyard
(May Contain Spoilers)
1. Possible future/Alternative Reality
I really enjoyed that Aveyard used our own world as a foundation for the world in the Red Queen series. I’m not quite sure if their world is supposed to be a “possible future” for ours or simply an alternative reality but either way it works. And of course, the mirroring of the political climate between our world and theirs is greatly appreciated.
2. Superpowers!!!
In this world, many people have powers; the ability to wield fire, lightning, water, wind, or metal, teleportation, superstrength, etc. It is awesome and I wish I could brag about having some cool power too but alas, I must continue living vicariously through book characters.
3. Samos Siblings
Evangeline and Tolly are the best siblings ever! Their love and protectiveness of each other remind me of my relationship with my brother. There is nothing that I wouldn’t do for him. It was nice to have a portrayal of opposite gender siblings that are really close without it crossing serious lines (Cersei & Jaime).
4. Cal
While it was incredibly slow and seriously painful, I’m grateful and relieved that Cal eventually came around to doing what was right, not what was easy.
5. Mare
As always, yay for strong independent females! And while I love a good love story with the couple together in the end, I thought it was refreshing that Mare decided to be solo. Again, not what I was expecting, nor what I wanted but definitely what she needed.
6. The Ending
While not exactly the “and they lived happily-ever-after” ending I wanted, the ending was positive and satisfying more or less.
Ultimately I want more. I need to know what happens, do Cal and Mare end up together again?! How do things progress and change in their world? And I happily came across, “Broken Throne” on Goodreads, Red Queen Book 4.5. Looking forward to reading that in the future!
