Kingdom of Ash

Kingdom of Ash

Throne of Glass #7

by Sarah J. Maas

Nikki’s Rating: 10 out of 10

Summary: Literally the whole world is going to shit. Aelin is captured and completely powerless chained in an iron coffin by the bitch queen Maeve; Rowan is frantically searching the world for her. Manon, Dorian, and Chaol are all scrambling to find help and allies. Aedion is trying to hold everything together and lead the army while Lysandra pretends to be Aelin but doesn’t actually have the power of the Firebringer. And well, Earwan is spewing out all his minions and monsters in hopes of conquering the world, killing everyone, and then destroying it. Nice guy.

10 Kick-Ass Things about KINGDOM OF ASH by Sarah J. Maas

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. The Writing of Maas

Sarah J. Maas is a wonderful writer. With an active imagination, great story-telling skills, and a passion for her characters, Maas truly shines and is one of my favorite authors.

2. Humor

One of my favorite things about Maas’ writing is her humor! Many of her characters are beloved because of their wit and sarcasm.

3. Strong Female Protagonists

As always, props to having a strong, sexual, independent female protagonist but Maas doesn’t stop there… all of Maas’ female characters are portrayed as strong women. Girl power!

4. A Court of Thorns and Roses

I really loved the reference to A Court of Thorns and Roses that Maas included in a “Kingdom of Ash”:

“She passed through a world of snowcapped mountains under shining stars…They were Fae, but this was not her world… The winged male, beautiful beyond reason… lifted a hand, as if in greeting. A blast of dark power, like a gentle summer night, slammed into her.”

5. Up and Down… and All Around

“Kingdom of Ash” was so exciting! I was on an emotional rollercoaster the whole time, going from apprehension and anxiety to joy and laughing to despair and crying. Truly an amazing series with great writing, pacing, and lovable characters!

6. It All Comes Together

Perhaps its an OCD thing but I cannot tell you how satisfying it was to be reading “Kingdom of Ash” and noticing all the loose ends Maas left throughout the other novel come tying together. I like the overall “things happen for a reason” theme.

7. Group Effort!

I found it quite refreshing that in the end, it did not all depend on just one person. Of course, Aelin sacrificed and endured a lot to “save the world” but in the end, it took trusting and supporting others too.

8. The Couples

As always, my sappy-ass is thrilled by all the love going around! We got Aelin & Rowan, Chaol & Yrene, Manon & Dorian, and my 2 favorite couples: Lysandra & Aedion, and Elide & Lorcan… Lochan.

9. Happily-Ever-After

I’m so relieved that overall this series ended on a positive note! I was truly afraid that Maas was going to rip out my heart and stomp all over it by having one (or more) of the main characters die tragically. Thank you for being kind Sarah!

10. The End

It is really bittersweet when a beloved book series comes to an end. I am sad to say goodbye to those characters and that world or even whole universe but there is also a sense of relief that things are over. There is a feeling of closure and satisfaction.
