Book Review: 5 Likable Things about THE LUCKY ONE by Nicholas Sparks

The Lucky One

by Nicholas Sparks

Nikki’s Rating: 5 out of 10

Summary: U.S. Marine Logan Thibault takes off cross-country in search of the woman in a photograph he found on his tour in Iraq. Simply hoping to pay back his debt to her as the photograph became his lucky charm, Logan was unprepared to fall in love with the divorced single mother Elizabeth. But he hasn’t told her the whole truth and as they get closer, Elizabeth’s ex-husband is determined to use that to tear them apart.

5 Likable Things about THE LUCKY ONE by Nicholas Sparks

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. The Premise

The Lucky One has a very unique premise in that a marine finds a photograph of a woman while on tour. It ends up that the photograph belonged to another marine and was a picture of his sister. Since obtaining the photograph, Logan experiences overall good luck, winning poker games but most importantly, surviving missions that many of his comrades did not. Logan then searches for the woman in the photograph, Elizabeth, and falls in love.

2. Love Story

Of course, being a Nicholas Sparks novel, this is a love story and the reason why I picked up the novel. But what I appreciated about this novel also was that it was a love story involving a divorced woman with a child. Single mothers are not typically featured in love stories but they are just as deserving of relationships as anyone else.

3. Zeus

The true hero of The Lucky One is Zeus, Logan’s faithful loving German shepherd. Probably the best character, Zeus is a focal point throughout the novel. He was the means that allowed Logan to establish a relationship with Elizabeth’s son, which then caused Elizabeth to come out of her shell and get to know Logan. Zeus was also the reason why Clayton was more careful and less aggressive about getting rid of Logan.

4. The “Bad Guy”

Nicholas Sparks created a villain that was both extremely repulsive and totally believable. Clayton is an absolute sleaze, taking pictures of women sunbathing without their knowledge or consent, interfering with his ex’s relationships, and wanting women around simply to “unwind.” Just gross! And unfortunately, there are men who are like that in the real world.

5. Happy Ending

Overall, even with the “tragedy” in the end of the book, The Lucky One had a happy ending which was a bit unexpected for me but much needed. The book ends on a positive note leaving the reader feeling satisfied that Logan and Elizabeth will be able to continue their relationship and live happily ever after.

7 Sassy Things about MIDNIGHT’S SEDUCTION by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Camdyn MacKenna

While all the Warriors have pasts filled with loss, trauma, grief and regret, Camdyn’s story was quite heart wrenching. He was married once and watched his wife not just grow old and die but become bitter and unhappy with their marriage because he was immortal.

2. Kristin

Kristin was a side character that was introduced in “Midnight’s Lover” and secretly planted at the MacLeod castle by Declan. Happily, the Druids and Warriors have figured this out and while it is sad that she died, good riddance, who knows what kind of damage she could have done.

3. Laria

“Midnight’s Seduction” was full of “finally” moments, read on to come across more. So many things happened in this novel that readers have been waiting for. One of those being Laria. Not only were the Warriors and Druids able to find Laria but they also awakened her. Time to kick some Deirdre ass!

4. Malcolm

Finally, finally Malcolm has redeemed himself! While never truly bad, Malcolm has made some poor choices and has been following Deirdre, becoming one of her henchmen. Regardless, when it counted he made the right choice and turned the tide to ensure Deirdre’s demise.

5. Deidre’s End

Deirdre has finally met her end at the hands of the Warriors, Druids, and her sister Laria. While the death of Deirdre cost Laria’s life, it was absolutely necessary and a long time coming. Victory dance!

6. New Beginnings

With a happy ending of Saffron and Camdyn being together, their union was made so much more magical with finding out that Saffron is carrying his child.

7. Midnight’s Warrior

Donna Grant’s Dark World series continues in Book 4 of the Dark Warriors series, “Midnight’s Warrior.”

5 Dashing Things about DARK HEAT by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Short Stories

While short stories are not my favorite as you do not get to know individual characters as well, it is always nice when short stories are collected in one book. With “Dark Heat,” three short stories are included: Dark Craving Dark World 8.1/Dark Kings 0.1; Night’s Awakening Dark World 8.2/Dark Kings 0.2; and Dawn’s Desire Dark World 8.2/Dark Kings 0.3. There is also a bonus story, Passion’s Claim included.

2. Dragons

Dragons are AWESOME! I’m so happy that Grant included dragon-shifters/dragon warriors in the Dark World series. These warriors are amazing, they can shapeshift into dragons, their original forms, and they are also responsible for protecting and caring for the dragons. Breaks my heart that they had to send the dragons to another plane of existence due to dragons being hunted by humans. Humans ruin everything!

3. Erotic

Each story heats up with erotic scenes between the featuring couples as they fall in love and can no longer deny the passion between them.

4. Characters

As always, Donna Grant writes enjoyable and likable characters. Her men are usually gentlemen who are tender, strong, and fiercely loyal to each other and their women. And most importantly, Grant doesn’t write damsels in distress but rather strong, independent women who are equals to their men.

5. Midnight’s Seduction

Donna Grants Dark World series continues in “Midnight’s Seduction,” the Dark Warriors Book 3.

Book Review: 7 Liked Things about MIDNIGHT’S LOVER by Donna Grant

“Midnight’s Lover”

Dark World #8; Dark Warriors #2

by Donna Grant

Nikki’s Rating: 7 out of 10

Summary: Thrown four centuries into the future, Ian is in bad shape. Torn apart by the death of his twin brother, Ian is now in a desperate battle against the demon god he and his brother shared. Worst of all, if he cannot control his god, he may end up hurting and possibly killing Danielle, the beautiful druid that has captured his heart.

7 Liked Things about MIDNIGHT’S LOVER by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Twins

While it was absolutely tragic that Duncan died, I think Grant really captured the beauty of the special connection many twins can share with each other. Made total sense that they equally shared one god and could feel each other’s pain.

2. The Villains

Ugh, Deirdre and Declan. These two are just so vile, greedy, and delusional. They truly deserve each other and I’m hoping that one of them will take out the other in their grab for power.

3. Malcolm

Malcolm continues to struggle with his orders from Deirdre and I’m hoping that it will be enough for him to walk away from her soon and join up with the MacLeods et al. Always intriguing to have those characters that are more fluid in their morals and alliances because you are never really sure what they are going to do in the end.

4. Sizzling

A true romance, “Midnight’s Lover” features sizzling erotic scenes between Ian and Danielle.

5. Pacing

As always, Grant gives a good story with some twists and turns. As a whole, she writes well with likeable characters, enjoyable banter, a vivid imagination, and great pacing, keeping the story going and readers interested.

6. Happy Ending

Overall the ending was pretty positive and I’m grateful for that as things could have gone totally south. Ian and Dani survived and stay together, the infiltrator was discovered and destroyed, but most importantly, Duncan has moved on and found peace.

7. Dark Heat

The Dark World series continues in Donna Grant’s “Dark Heat,” a collection of short stories that begins her Dark Kings series.

Book Review: 7 Suave Things about SHADOW HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant

“Shadow Highlander”

Dark World #5; Dark Sword #5

by Donna Grant

Nikki’s Rating: 7 out of 10

Summary: In a daring attempt to save as many druids as he can, Galen invites a clan of druids to MacLeod castle. As they travel across Scotland, Galen finds out that not all is as it seems. The druids are hiding a terrible secret, a secret that involves Reaghan, the druid that has caught his eye. With discord and strife beginning to tear at the alliance between druids and the Warriors of MacLeod castle, Galen must do all he can to protect Reaghan or risk losing her forever.

7 Suave Things about SHADOW HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. The Lore

Donna Grant has a truly creative imagination and even with many characters, no two Warriors have the same power/ability. “Shadow Highlander” focuses on Galen who has the ability to read minds when touching another and really shows what a burden this power is.

2. Reaghan

A very powerful druid who is extremely courageous and tries to protect her people at any cost. She is fierce and yet kind and gentle, a good fit for Galen.

3. Galen

Cursed and blessed with telepathic abilities, Galen struggles throughout “Shadow Highlander” as his power take their toll whenever he touches another. It is a lonely burden and one that truly disturbs him when he comes into contact with an evil-being. Happily, Galen learns to control his power and it is no longer his dirty secret.

4. The Plot

Just when you thought things were coming to an end for Deirdre… The crazy bitch is too powerful for a simple death by killing the body, oh no, now we got to find some artifacts, locate her sister, then wake said sister up. So complicated but so intriguing!

5. Racy

Things get hot and racy between Galen and Reaghan in “Shadow Highlander.”

6. Happy Ending

“Shadow Highlander” made me so nervous towards the end! I was really afraid that Galen would lose Reaghan and/or he wouldn’t be able to touch her without reading her mind. Thankfully we can all breathe a sigh of relief as things worked out in the end.

7. Darkest Highlander

As we now know that Deirdre’s body and spirit must be destroyed to end her, the Dark World series continues in “Darkest Highlander.”

Book Review: 7 Worthy Things about WICKED HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant

“Wicked Highlander”

Dark World #3; Dark Sword #3

by Donna Grant

Nikki’s Rating: 7 out of 10

Summary: Captured once again by his eternal enemy Deirdre, Quinn must stay alive until his brothers are able to rescue him. Harder still, he must keep his sanity and not give in to the ancient demon lurking below his skin desperate to escape and take over Quinn’s mind. Believing that there is nothing that Deirdre could do to him to make him become her lover, he is sadly mistaken when he falls in love with Marcail, a druid Deirdre is trying to kill. Quinn is out of time and now he must choose between losing his very soul or losing the love of his life forever.

7 Worthy Things about WICKED HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Quinn MacLeod

While Fallon is the leader and Lucan is the “good guy”, Quinn is the MacLeod “bad boy,” making him absolutely tantalizing and irresistible. Tormented by his failure to save his family years ago, Quinn is reckless and rageful but with a tender heart and fierce protectiveness of those he cares for.

2. Marcail

Beautiful Marcail with her hair of braids is a powerful druid but she is also brave, resourceful, thoughtful, and so caring of all around her. With the ability to take others’ pain away, she allows herself to suffer instead.

3. New Warriors

“Wicked Highlander” introduces more Warriors that may join the MacLeod brothers in their fight against Deirdre. There are Arron, the identical twins Duncan and Ian, as well as questionable Charon, who probably can’t be trusted.

4. The Villainess

The Dark World series features a very intriguing villainess. Deirdre is not just a power-hungry bitch but is a powerful drough, a dark-magic druid, who is aligned with the Devil himself. She is evil and as far as anyone can tell, immortal. Killing her is going to take some serious power and strategy.

5. Passionate

“Wicked Highlander” features plenty of passionate scenes between Marcail and Quinn as they fall for each other.

6. Three Pieces to the Whole

There are so many original and interesting bits to Donna Grant’s Dark World series, which makes reading the series all that more enjoyable. While the ancient evil gods normally choose the strongest warrior in a clan to possess, the MacLeod brothers all share one god as they were all considered equally strong. Being 3 pieces of the whole, when they fight together they are nearly unstoppable.

7. Untamed Highlander

The bitch just won’t die but happily, that means more sexy Warriors for us! The Dark World series continues in Donna Grant’s “Untamed Highlander.”

Book Review: 4 Hopeful Things about HEARTS OF SHADOW by Kira Brady

“Hearts of Shadow”

Deadglass #2

by Kira Brady

Nikki’s Rating: 4 out of 10

Summary:  Grace Mercer must fight wraiths every day now that the world has plummeted into chaos due to the Unraveling. Caught in the middle of the war between the Kivati shapeshifters and the Drekar, dragon shifters, Grace is simply trying to survive like all other humans but Leif Asgard is convinced she is more than that. As Leif and Grace hunt for answers to save the world, something ancient begins to hunt them and the only way to save each other is to embrace the love they’ve been desperately denying.

4 Hopeful Things about HEARTS OF SHADOW by Kira Brady

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Grace Mercer

Grace reminds me so much of Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander in the Millennium series. Both women are abrasive and downright rude but love deeply and are extremely loyal. Like Lisbeth, Grace kicks some major ass and takes shit from nobody.

2. The Lore

While novels featuring supernaturals are nothing new, I appreciate Kira Brandy bringing different elements into her universe. In “Hearts of Shadow,” the incorporation of runes to protect and actually use in battle was very interesting. And the Deadglass series features dragon-shifters, which is totally awesome!

3. Sweltering

Things heat up in “Hearts of Shadow” as Grace and Leif give in to their desires.

4. Hearts of Chaos

While Grace and Leif got their happily-ever-after, their world is in deep shit, Tiamat has awoken. The Deadglass series continues in Kira Brady’s “Hearts of Chaos.”

Dark World #1; Dark Sword #1

by Donna Grant

Nikki’s Rating: 8 out of 10

Summary: Avoiding all contact with the outside world, Lucan and his brothers continue to struggle with their immortality. As they battle the demons inside themselves, the MacLeods allow the world to forget them, hoping that She will forget them as well. But then Lucan sees Cara and his whole world shifts. 8 Daring Things about DANGEROUS HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Lore

One of the strongest qualities of Donna Grant’s Dark Sword series is the lore. While including a touch of real history, Grant includes druids, both good and evil, and warriors who “house” ancient demonic gods that are constantly trying to take over their hosts. What could possibly go wrong?

2. Lucan

While all the MacLeods are wonderful in their own right, Lucan is the best of them. He is strong, both physically and emotionally, thoughtful, caring, and responsible. He is simply, a good man and always tries to do the right thing. It doesn’t hurt that he is also sinfully attractive and seductive.

3. The MacLeods

As stated above, the MacLeods all have their charms but the dynamic between them is so heartwarming. They are truly brothers in every sense of the word, three pieces to one whole.

4. Cara

While Cara may have literally been a damsel in distress upon meeting Lucan, she is not a helpless twat. On the contrary, Cara is shown to be very brave and willing to learn all to help herself and others.

5. Scorching

The heat between Lucan and Cara is intense! “Dangerous Highlander” features some scorching erotic scenes.

6. Writing

“Dangerous Highlander” is written well with no unnecessary descriptives. Donna Grant writes clearly and keeps good pacing throughout the story.

7. Fallon

Pretty sure I was smiling like an idiot when Fallon transformed into his god-form to save Cara for the sake of Lucan. I was so proud of him!

8. Forbidden Highlander

Donna Grant’s Dark Sword and Dark World series continue in “Forbidden Highlander” as the MacLeods continue their battle with Deirdre.

Book Review: 6 Tender Things about TOUCH OF STEEL by Kate Cross

“Touch of Steel”

Clockwork Agents #2

by Kate Cross

Nikki’s Rating: 6 out of 10

Summary:  Gravely injured while fighting Howard, the murderer of her beloved brother, Claire Brooks falls into the hands of the Wardens of the Realm. As an agent for the Company, she is now at the mercy of her enemies and chooses to defect in order to reach her goal. Teamed up with Warden Alastair Payne, they hunt Howard while pretending to be engaged. An irresistible attraction develops between Alastair and Claire and they must decide if they are truly allies or enemies.

6 Tender Things about TOUCH OF STEEL by Kate Cross

(May Contain Spoilers)

1. Claire

A deadly agent who loves fiercely and loyally as evident in the way she hunts the murderer of her beloved brother.

2. Friendship

Kate Cross created characters that show friendship at its best! Without knowing Claire, Arden and Luke stand beside Alastair’s decision to include Claire in the Wardens because they trust and love Alastair, no further proof was needed.

3. Alastair

While Alastair has many faults, including coveting his best friend’s wife and being a stubborn ass, he is a good man. Publicly defending and proclaiming his love for Claire redeemed him in many ways.

4. The Heat

Erotic scenes between Alastair and Claire were hot and steamy.

5. Happily-Ever-After

“Touch of Steel” was quite the rollercoaster and while it turns out Claire’s brother was a huge dick, Claire at least got her happily-ever-after with Alastair as they continue fighting as Wardens of the Realm.

6. Breath of Iron

The Clockwork Agent series continues in Kate Cross’s next steampunk novel “Breath of Iron.”
