9 Best Things about Sarah J. Maas’ “A Court of Wings and Ruin”

(MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)

1. Another Fairytale Retelling?!

Not sure if this is Maas just making sure to keep the theme going of retelling fairytales or if she plans on continuing this story arc but I love that “A Cout of Wings and Ruin” features yet another fairytale. Book 1: “A Court of Thorns and Roses” retells the classic story of beauty and the beast with Feyre being held prisoner by Tamlin, a High Fae Lord who can shapeshift into a beast, and ultimately falling in love with him (Stockholm syndrome). Book 2: “A Court of Mist and Fury” features the Hades and Persephone myth with Feyre, the mistress of the Spring Court, being “taken” by the High Fae Lord of the Night Court, Rhysand, who bears batlike, demonic wings. In “A Court of Wings and Ruin” Maas mentions the 6th queen on the continent who is currently cursed. A curse that keeps her prisoner in the body of a bird during the day and confined to her lake nightly. I would love a retelling of “Swan Lake” by Maas, so I hope she moves forward with this idea!

2. Rhysand

So selfless, so loving! Rhysand, a male who cares so much for others that he sacrifices his life for them even knowing most hate him. He gives up not only his life but a chance to have a future with his mate. He is too good, we don’t deserve him! When Rhysand died I cried, I was so devastated. Then I was crying because I was so happy that he came back. Thank you, Tamlin!

3. Feyre

Feyre: strong, intelligent, beautiful, sexy, kind, compassionate, fierce, loving, powerful… you get the point, Feyre is awesome!

4. Mor

Lovely Mor! I love her spunky personality, her no-fucks-given attitude, and flirtatiousness. I was very excited to learn that she prefers women! Thank you, Maas, for including an LGBTQ main character in this series. While the LGBTQ community continues to be stigmatized and treated less than in our world, I will always thank any writer for including an LGBTQ character.

5. Amren

Wow, this series is just filled with strong, opinionated, no bullshit, intelligent women, love it! I love that Amren is basically a fire-drake. She is an immensely powerful immortal being of fire and light, who loves shiny things! But seriously, for all her badassery she loves deeply. I was so proud of her when she sacrificed herself. And so fucking relieved and joyful when she came back!

6. Cassian & Nesta

Nesta is a bitch and I love her for it! While I have issues with the way she treats Feyre, I love her fierceness to protect and defend the ones she loves. Sometimes the ones who act the toughest and most distant are the ones who care and love the deepest. Nesta is definitely one of those! And seriously, she couldn’t have a more loyal, honorable, and dedicated protector than Cassian. I’m dying for their love story to blossom! I feel so tortured when 2 characters are obviously in love but too stubborn or afraid to act upon it. Killing me Maas!

7. Sarah J. Maas

Since I love this series, must praise the storyteller mastermind! I love the way Maas writes, she is an incredible weaver of words and has great delivery. I appreciate Maas’ creative imagination, world-building details, fast-paced action, and fantastic character development. And I seriously thank Maas for not breaking my heart permanently in this book and everyone lived!

8. Redemption

So proud of Feyre’s father! And even Tamlin was a hero for a minute (then back to huge asshole).

9. The Ending

Again, so grateful that all the main characters lived! The end of this book was so exciting, with lots of surprises, close calls, and good conclusions. But of course, Maas leaves me wanting more and I cannot wait until the next book!
